Understanding Grief Therapy

What is grief therapy?

Grief therapy offers a supportive and compassionate space to process the emotional, physical, social, mental, and spiritual impact of loss. Whether you’re mourning a loved one, a life change, or the loss of a relationship or role, therapy can help you move through grief—not around it—with care and intention.  The goal – integrate the loss into your life.

Who is grief therapy for?

Grief affects everyone differently. I work with adults who are grieving the death of a loved one, facing anticipatory grief, experiencing non-death losses (such as divorce, estrangement, or caregiving fatigue), or navigating complicated, unresolved grief.

How is grief therapy different from talking to a friend or family member?

While loved ones may offer support, they may not always know how to hold space for the full range of your grief. In therapy, you’re met without judgment or pressure to “move on.” I provide a healing process grounded in being a fellow traveler on the grief journey.

How is hope found or cultivated in grief therapy?

Hope in grief therapy doesn’t come in big, sweeping moments—it often arrives quietly, in small, meaningful steps. In the beginning, it may feel distant or even impossible. That’s okay. Grief therapy creates a compassionate space where you’re invited to feel deeply, mourn openly, and speak the truth of your loss without judgment.

As you process your grief, hope begins to take root—not by forgetting what was lost, but by honoring it. Together, we explore how to carry your loss while also gently reconnecting with life. Over time, you may notice subtle shifts: a moment of peace, a clearer breath, a sense of strength returning. These are the seeds of hope. It grows as you begin to trust your ability to move forward—not as you were before, but as someone reshaped by love, loss, and resilience.

Starting The Process

When should I seek grief therapy?

There’s no “right time.” Some seek therapy soon after a loss, while others wait months or even years. If grief feels overwhelming, isolating, or like it’s interfering with your ability to function, therapy may help.

What can I expect in a grief therapy session?

Prior to our first session, a link will be sent to complete some preliminary paperwork.  Then each session is guided by your needs and desires. We may talk about your loss, explore your relationship with the person or thing you’ve lost, learn ways to cope when activated (triggered), or simply sit with the emotions that arise. It’s a space for both expression and reflection.

How long does grief therapy last?

There’s no timeline for grief. Some people come for a short period of support; others benefit from longer-term work. We’ll collaborate on what feels helpful and sustainable for you.

Practice Questions

Do you offer in-person or online sessions?

I offer in-person, virtual, or hybrid sessions to meet your comfort and accessibility needs. Online sessions are conducted through a secure, confidential platform.

What are your fees? Do you accept insurance?

The fee for a 50-minute session is $165.

I do not accept insurance. I provide a superbill for out-of-network reimbursement if your plan allows.

A limited number of sliding scale spots may be available—please reach out to inquire. I also offer longer sessions and intensives as options.

Private pay does not require a diagnosis for the insurance company and sessions are not limited by insurance. This allows us to tailor our sessions to your specific needs.

You have the right to receive a “Good Faith Estimate” explaining how much your medical and mental health care will cost.

Under Section 2799B-6 of the Public Health Service Act, health care providers and health care facilities are required to inform individuals who are not enrolled in a plan or coverage or a Federal health care program, or not seeking to file a claim with their plan or coverage both orally and in writing of their ability, upon request or at the time of scheduling health care items and services, to receive a “Good Faith Estimate” of expected charges.

Under the law, health care providers need to give patients who don’t have insurance or who are not using insurance an estimate of the expected charges for medical services, including psychotherapy services.

  • You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate for the total expected cost of any non-emergency items or services.
  • You can ask your health care provider, and any other provider you choose, for a Good Faith Estimate before you schedule a service.
  • If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you can dispute the bill.
  • Make sure to save a copy or picture of your Good Faith Estimate.

For questions or more information about your right to a Good Faith Estimate, visit www.cms.gov/nosurprises or call (800) 368-1019.

What is your cancellation policy?

Appointments must be canceled at least 24 hours in advance to avoid a cancellation fee. The cancellation fee is $165 without a 24-hour advanced notice.

Emotional Support & Safety

Is grief therapy confidential?

Yes. What you share in therapy is private and protected by law, with a few legal exceptions for safety. Your story is treated with the utmost respect and care.

What if I feel like my grief is “too much” or “not enough”?

There is no right or wrong way to grieve. Whether your grief feels complicated, numb, angry, or ever-present—your experience is valid. Therapy is a space where all of it can be held gently, without comparison or shame.
